Hot-air balloon training
Learn to fly a hot-air balloon
Whether it’s for a single flight or for the rest of your life, Beaune-Montgolfière offers training by a federal instructor. He can teach you the rigorous art of hot-air balloon piloting, while sharing his passion with you in a friendly atmosphere.
Following solid training in hot-air balloon piloting, and after passing theoretical and practical tests, you’ll be awarded your pilot’s license.
Training
Practical: The courses are given during 16 minimum flights (approx. 45 minutes) around Beaune in dual control with your instructor. The length of training depends on your availability and the weather conditions, but it’s reasonable to expect a few months of solid, high-quality training, validated by two solo flights. We provide you with all the latest equipment you need (envelope, nacelle, burner, gas, trailer, 4X4 vehicle, etc.).
Theory: Approximately 12 hours of lessons are spread throughout the course, covering air traffic regulations, flight technique, meteorology, navigation and gases. . . These courses can take place on board during the flight, in situ.
Regulations
The regulations require a minimum of 16 hours flying time as a hot-air balloon pilot, including at least 12 ascents. Two of these ascents, lasting a total of at least 2 hours, must be made with the pilot alone on board, including one at an altitude of over 1000 meters. At the end of these solos, you can be “released”, fit to take the flight test with an examiner. The flight test also includes a radiotelephony test.
Hot-air ballooning is regulated by the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC). You need a balloon pilot’s license to fly. To do so, you need to pass a medical examination by a civil aviation-approved doctor, and be at least 17 years old.
